NOTES is a 52-channel audio-visual media installation. It utilizes a selection of over 1,700 spontaneously invented words, phrases neologisms and onomatopoeia autobiographically written by Heimbecker over a 6-year period between 2008 and 2014.

The hand-written texts of NOTES are converted to jpeg image and are distributed equally throughout 52 digital LCD screens. The screens are arranged in a grid on the wall, 4 by 13 units. Each LCD screen has its own control processor, mini speakers and a motion sensor. When activated the NOTES network generates a nearly infinite amount of text combinations in the form of a constantly changing rhizomatic poem.

In addition to his texts Heimbecker has made short sound recordings of the hiss and clicks of 52 vinyl record ends from his private music collection. These record endings create an important low amplitude element of the multi-channel audio design.

Heimbecker has conceptually organized his NOTES network by borrowing from the rhizomatic philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari “which allows for multiple, non-hierarchical entry and exit points in data representation and interpretation” to create “far-reaching associations that apprehend multiplicity”.

As a final layer of multiplicity in the NOTES installation Heimbecker has composed  a studio soundtrack from the Metafive installation. The Metafive soundtrack is created from texts Heimbecker wrote between November 2013 and December 2014. Using his Word Music II software (2015), word length musical phrases are produced for digital instrument samples that are scored directly from the letter combinations of each text. When these phrases are arranged in sentence like sequences they create a musical composition.

The Metafive soundtrack is composed in B minor for a virtual quintet of 2 pianos, 2 cellos and a contrabass. Metafive is presented in the NOTES installation from a separate digital screen processor combined with an inconspicuous high quality stereo sound bar located above the 52-screen network, seamlessly blending together with the gentle textures of the randomized record ends within the NOTES network.

The layered analogue and digital combinations of elements in the NOTES installation (text, image, thought, sound, technology etc) produces a mesmerizing universal and personal contemporary hybrid when experienced.

Word Music II is a MaxMSP software designed by the Heimbecker and developed during an artist residency at Agence TOPO in 2015. During this residency Heimbecker produced RIPALIPER (2015) a live audio-visual performance for Sortir l’ecran / Spoken Screen and Metafive (2015) a 5 screen installation.
